Humans have dramatically altered the planet’s surface in recent centuries . Subsequent changes to Earth’s systems may be complex. Geographers investigate the spatial and temporal variability of these changes to quantify rates of change and identify feedback loops*.

*Feedback loops: where change in a variable results in either an amplification (positive feedback) or a dampening (negative feedback) of that change.
